OEM VS ODM

As you know, when it comes to managing Chromebooks, one of the most important things is ensuring that you have reliable chargers that will keep your devices running smoothly. But with so many options and potentially fake devices out there, how do you choose between OEM and ODM chargers? In this post, we'll look at the differences between the two and see what should be considered to fit you best.

DEFINING OEM AND ODM

First, let's define our terms. OEM stands for "original equipment manufacturer," while ODM stands for "original design manufacturer." An OEM charger is one that came with the original device or was built in the initial batch run of chargers for the OEM and will have the manufacturer's logo on the label. So, when you need to buy a replacement charger and want an OEM, it is known as an OEM Pull charger because of a limited supply, meaning the charger has been in the market and out in rotation. These chargers are repaired under warranty and released back into the market or were new in the initial run for the OEM but could be years old.

On the other hand, an ODM charger is manufactured by a third-party company (such as LiteOn or Chicony) that has been contracted by the OEM manufacturer (such as HP or Dell) to make the chargers that are shipped with their devices. ODM chargers will not have the OEM manufacturer's logo on the label but, if sourced from a reputable manufacturer, are exactly the same. In fact, you may also notice when taking a new Chromebook out of the box that the charger doesn't always have any OEM logo on it, which indicates that they have partnered with an ODM.

THE OPTIONS

So first, why would you choose an OEM Pull charger over the ODM option? One reason is if your school board requires exact 1:1 replacements for damaged parts. Using an OEM charger ensures that you're getting the exact same product that came with your device. Additionally, some customers may have been taken advantage of by generic or fake chargers in the past, and they feel more comfortable sticking with the OEM option.

However, there are benefits to choosing an ODM charger over an OEM Pull. For one, ODM chargers are factory new and have never been used, which may be important for some users. Additionally, while ODM chargers are the same as OEM chargers in terms of specs and performance, they can be up to $10 cheaper. This is because they lack the name brand and brand awareness of the OEM option.

To help illustrate the similarities and differences between OEM and ODM chargers, think of them as name-brand and generic medications. For example, you might have the option to buy Motrin, but you could also get ibuprofen which is exactly the same active ingredient and does the same job, and, in some cases, they may be created in the same factory at the same time but have different labels and prices. Similarly, OEM and ODM chargers are made in the same factory but have different labels and price points.

When comparing labels for both options, you'll see that they have the same specs, including volts, amps, and wattage output. For example, both OEM and ODM chargers for Chromebooks typically have an output of 5.0 V - 3.0 A, 9.0 V - 3.0 A, 12.0 V - 3.0 A, and 20.0 V - 2.25 A. It's also important to note that both OEM and ODM chargers will be UL certified as the ODM certifies the product for both versions of the product.

THE FINAL VERDICT

If there is a drastic difference in price between identical products from two different suppliers, it should make a consumer do a double take. While it may be tempting to purchase a product that is significantly cheaper per piece, it’s always a good idea to ask yourself why it’s that much cheaper.

OEM and ODM products go through rigorous testing and are backed by safety certifications. They are developed with specific Chromebooks and Chromebook models in mind to charge the devices effectively. It’s safe to say counterfeit AC adapters likely did not go through the same level of testing as the legitimate versions, and, therefore can lower the price tag per piece. While the price may be tempting, ultimately, counterfeit products are simply not worth the risk, especially since they are deployed to students.
