Across your entire school district, it goes without saying that more than a handful of Chromebooks come back to you each month in need of repair. While it may save you some time to send your broken devices to a third party repair shop, you may be surprised how simple these repairs are and how much money you could be saving by fixing in-house.

We understand that it may seem like a daunting task, but there are huge benefits, so stick with us while we highlight them in this blog post.

1. Chromebooks are easier to repair than you think

When you aren’t used to doing something on a regular basis, a task can seem more complicated than it actually is. If you'd give it a shot, you'd likely realize it’s not as difficult as you thought it would be. This premise absolutely applies to Chromebook repair.

The easiest way to start is by visiting our Chromebook Repair Library. From here, you are able to watch and read helpful step-by-step instructions on how to fix your device. For more help on how to use our repair library, here’s a simple video on how it works:

Any repair tool you see used in these videos can be found on our website as well!

2. In-house Chromebook repair will save you money

“Think of it like an oil change,” Stephen, our Technical Product Specialist, says. “Why pay $70 for a repair person to do it, when you can go to an auto parts store and buy everything you need to do it yourself for $30?”

This same rule essentially applies to Chromebook repair as well! Considering Chromebooks are so easy to repair, shipping the work to a more expensive third party starts to make less sense than just doing it yourself. When supplies are so easily accessible, it’s important to consider how much money you could be saving from each repair by not outsourcing. Anything you would have otherwise paid someone else to do, you can do for the cost of the parts.

Considering most directors are working within a tight, fixed budget, saving the money where you can is hard to pass up.

Now that we’ve talked about why, let’s consider your options for how to make this a reality...

1. Repair Chromebooks yourseIf or within your department

Rolling up your sleeves and doing it yourself is a great option if you have the time to dedicate to it. Considering most repairs only take fifteen to twenty minutes to complete, the turnaround time on each Chromebook isn’t that bad either.

While this may be the most ideal solution for some, we also understand that not all tech directors have the time available to do the repairs themselves, which leads us to the next option.

2. Involving your students in the repair process

This can be a great opportunity to engage your student body in a new and creative way! Many school districts are also taking this approach in a number of different ways. Some schools offer an elective where students can learn to fix devices, others give students after school internships where they fix devices in need of repair. There are many ways to go about a solution like this, so don’t be afraid to get creative with it!

3. Hiring a part-time employee

The opportunity to provide someone with a job is so important, especially with the economic fallout the coronavirus ensued. This option may not make sense for some smaller school districts, but bigger districts that are seeing a large quantity of broken devices on a regular basis could benefit from an added employee. It's possible that hiring a repair tech as opposed to offboarding repair needs could actually save money in the long run. This would certainly make sense for a busier tech director that couldn’t handle the additional workload, plus it would offer a great opportunity for a member of your community.
